Bleeding Kansas to Harpers Ferry: John Brown’s Radical Crusade | The American Story | Ep 15
Before John Brown became a martyr to some and a monster to others, he made a vow dedicating his life to the destruction of slavery. This episode follows the radical abolitionist through the chaos of Bleeding Kansas, the vicious murders at Pottawatomie Creek, and Brown’s foolhardy attack on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry. Meet Frederick Douglass, the former slave who pricked the nation’s conscience with his eloquence, and the Secret Six who funded Brown’s doomed war on slavery. As Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin stirred the nation, Brown chose violence over words, producing shockwaves that helped move the nation toward Civil War.
