In 1876, as America turns 100, Alexander Graham Bell makes the first successful telephone call, Philadelphia dazzles millions at the Centennial Exposition, and the Wild West forges legends from Custer’s Last Stand, Jesse James, Wyatt Earp, and Wild Bill Hickok. But the year’s greatest drama unfolds at the ballot box when Democrat Samuel Tilden wins the popular vote while disputed returns leave Republican Rutherford B. Hayes one electoral vote from the presidency. With rival electors, accusations of fraud, racial violence, and a constitutional crisis threatening the nation, Congress creates an unprecedented Electoral Commission to decide who will become president and whether America’s fragile postwar republic can survive.
